Product Description Released in September of 1999. Produced by Grammy winning producers David Kershenbaum and John Jones. About the Artist Pop/rock singer-songwriter Emily Richards took her first step on the road to national recognition when John Jones, the Grammy-winning producer for Celine Dion, Duran Duran and Fleetwood Mac stumbled upon Emily's CD, "I Should Be Flying." "Emily is a brilliant singer, songwriter and piano player," said Jones. "Her songs and style have a great maturity of melody and lyric." Jones immediately placed Emily in the studio to record a few of her songs with veteran musicians Michael Thompson (guitar player; Paul McCartney, Madonna, Celine Dion) and Steve Ferrone (drummer; Eric Clapton, Tom Petty). "After just moments with Emily in the studio, I knew this girl had that something special," remarked the project's engineer, Walter Turbitt. "Her songs, voice, beauty, and charismatic personality won me over immediately!" Emily can't remember a time when she didn't perform or play the piano, donning her first pair of tap shoes at age three. Living in up-state New York, Emily began studying the piano under her father's tutelage but soon graduated several teachers past him. The family moved to Utah where Emily discovered staff paper and wrote her first song, "Music Makes Me Smile." She was only 11 when this song won regional Reflections Contest honors. As a pre-teen pianist and composer, it became apparent early on that Emily was a perfectionist and hard worker, traits that would follow her throughout her life. She developed an intense training routine and began competing all over the United States. Her instructors required three hours of practice a day-starting at five each morning and continuing after school. Along with the piano, Emily studied ballet, jazz dance and singing. "Singing was undoubtedly the most challenging for me and quickly became my favorite. It was obvious that my many interests were strung on a common thread-all required performance." Emily's mother continually scolded, "You belong on a stage!" Throughout her teen years, Emily found herself more and more involved in performing groups and musical theater as well as writing and performing her high school's prom, dance concert and graduation themes. Emily had written over 40 songs by the time she completed high school. After graduation, Emily attended the University of Utah on a full academic scholarship where she began to study music and dance. Not far into either program, Emily fell victim to a serious car accident where she severely injured her back, making it impossible for her to dance or even sit at a piano. "The devastation I felt couldn't possibly be put into words," said Emily. "With head hung low, I changed my major to accounting and exchanged my leotards for business suits." It was during this transitional period at the age of 19 that Emily's life and music emphasis changed forever. "I started writing--a lot." With her rigid training routine now gone, Emily found that the new open space in her life allowed amazing things to flow out. "Working numbers during the day and emotions at night somehow cleansed me. I began to discover myself and my voice, realizing even more the powerful platform music can be for expression." After extensive rehabilitation, Emily gradually found herself once again immersed in music, doing a great deal of studio work for other artists. She became an integral part of the Salt Lake City music and recording scene, performing at every possible opportunity and gaining a rather large following. Desirous to widen her musical experiences, Emily headed for Nashville. She recorded in numerous studios and notable clubs, falling in love with the city and its musical pulse. While in Nashville, Emily got her big break when she auditioned for a special promotion with one of the country's largest movie theater chains and was selected from thousands of applicants. This honor allowed Emily to fund and produce her first album, I Should Be Flying, which was played in movies houses across the country. Millions heard Emily's music for the first time and the exposure opened many doors, including numerous performance opportunities such as The Olympic Torch Across America Celebration, the SRS Benefit Concert in Phoenix and opening for Martina McBride. Grateful for her experiences in Utah and Nashville, Emily decided it was time to immerse herself completely in her work as a musician. She signed on with a new management company and headed for Los Angeles. As usual for Emily, it didn't take long for her to make an impression. Soon after arriving, she was introduced by her manager to John Jones and began working with some of the top-name musicians in LA. "I am continually awed by the amazing musicians I have been fortunate enough to work with. I have learned so much from each one, and truly love working with these remarkable individuals. I discover more and more how much music is my motivation and the place where I find solace. I embrace this path I am traveling and know creating music is what I will be doing for a very long time."
