It features innovative version of songs by Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Nick Drake. The leader, Seamus Egan (flutes, tin whistles, uilleann pipes, guitars, etc.), won a bevy of Irish instrumental championships before he was out of his teens, and has since composed some notable film soundtracks, including The Brothers McMullen, which yielded the hit "I Will Remember You." Not surprisingly, Solas is one Celtic band that understands the meaning of a hook. This 2002 release is a mixed bag of jazzy floor-stompers, power-pop experiments, New Age exhalations, and ethereal ballads that make the most of Deirdre Scanlan's exquisite soprano. Winifred Horan's fiddling is especially evocative--dusky toned and effortlessly inventive--and the other players are also consistently on their game. Multi-instrumentalist wizard Seamus Egan leads the group; he was born in the Philadelphia area but grew up both there and in Ireland. Besides his three solo albums and his composing for film and theatre, he appeared on the soundtrack to Dead Man Walking . Native New Yorker Winifred Horan (fiddle, backing vocals) is a graduate of the New England Conservatory as well as former core member of Cherish The Ladies and The Sharon Shannon Band. Mick McAuley (accordions, whistle, vocals) is a virtuoso instrumentalist and delivers an evocative vocal on "Clothes Of Sand." Lead vocalist Deirdre Scanlan, a native of Nenagh, County Tipperary, made her mark in Ireland with her solo album Speak Softly, which received widespread praise. Donal Clancy, the highly talented son! of Liam Clancy of The Clancy Brothers, came to Solas after a two-year stint in the Eileen Ivers Band.
