Heavy metal and the venerable hard rock are nowadays essential parts of our musical everyday life and represent two of the most successful music genres, also in terms of physical purchases. For these styles, CDs are still spinning and vinyls are also cherished. We all know mega acts like Metallica and huge events like Wacken that underpin the status of hard rock even without statistics. And while other trends have come and gone, heavy metal was, is and will remain a perennial favorite. Within the huge crowd of metalheads there are still subtle differences. The traditional metal had its best time in the eighties, because as a successor of the important hard rock pioneers of the 70s, it was virtually invented in this decade. Whether "just" heavy metal, or later speed, thrash, doom, hair or prog - all this started in the eighties, based on the style of pioneers like Black Sabbath or Deep Purple. In the nineties, traditional heavy metal and its associated subgenres began to falter and were pushed into the background by grunge and crossover. Within these genres, however, it continued to exist somewhat hidden. At the end of the decade, the initially hesitant upheaval began with bands like Hammerfall and, at the latest in the two-thousands, trendless metal found its way back into the well-deserved spotlight. The "old" fans as well as a whole new generation of interested and curious people formed a very special scene within the scene: The "Metal Underground", which is actually too big for this term. Also there the heroes are called Iron Maiden or Saxon, but they have to share their throne with acts like Manilla Road or Griffin. Names that others may never have heard of. The festival "Keep It True" in Germany was dedicated to this scene. Similar events can be found all over Europe (Muskelrock Sweden, Brofest UK, etc.) and sporadically in the USA. A majority of the bands on this sampler (or musicians active in these groups) have played at such "cult festivals". The compilation mainly includes bands on Golden Core that A&R Neudi (ex-drummer of Manilla Road, currently active with Trance, Roxxcalibur and Jameson Raid) has signed or licensed for a reworked re-release since 2019. He himself is also a part of this scene, so it is not surprising to find many rarities and forgotten groups between names like Manilla Road, Griffin, Cutty Sark or Witchfynde. Thus, this double CD is perfect for explorers, because it is an acoustic shopping list. The booklet introduces and shows all the albums from which the songs are taken. An indeed unusual cover and a damn good CD! Perfectly suited for spontaneous purchase!
